Welcome to 7th Grade Science!

Week of August 25th thru August 29th:
For Tuesday, August 26th: Write 5 norms that are practiced at home. State whether you were involved in the decision making of these norms. Why or why not?

For Wednesday, August 27th: Using the Science Laboratory Safety Rules sheet given today, read each safety rule and apply the appropriate category to each rule. Keep in mind, these selections are what you believe is appropriate. Categories can be used multiple times. Write your responses on the sheet (after each rule), using only the abbreviations given to you, in pencil. Separate each abbreviated category with a comma.

For Thursday, August 28th: Review your lab safety rules; you must become familiar with each rule to assist in having a safe and workable environment for the population. Also, study the diagram displaying students in a laboratory setting. Be prepared to address safe and unsafe behaviors of each student in the diagram.

For Friday, August 29th: Think about what you must consider in order to be safe and accident-free when performing tasks, at home/away from home or just out and about. You must have a reason that explains why it is necessary for you to consider the outcome, before and during a behavior/event.

Week of September 01st thru September 05th:
For Tuesday, September 02th and Wednesday, September 03rd: (Due - Thursday, September 04th)
Write ten (10) safe behaviors that you practice, five (5) at home and five (5) away from home. Tell why you believe they are necessary, and exactly what type of accidents/injuries they prevent.

For Friday, September 05th: Write your interpretation of 'process skills'.

Week of September 08th thru September 12th:

For Thursday, September 25th: Define the following terms, record them on your Vocabulary List sheet: response; stimulus; structure.

For Friday, September 26th: Write an example for each characteristic of living things (organisms) that was discussed in class. These characteristics are located on the graphic organizer chart that was completed in class. Write each example in a complete sentence, and use an ink pen.

The following are examples for organisms having organization or order within a cell or cells:
  1. Nerve cells are specified only for the nervous system because organisms have order in their cell structure. OR
  2. Organisms are organized so that cells combine to make tissues, tissues combine to make up organs and organs form organ systems, such as, the circulatory system.

Week of September 29th thru October 3rd:
For Monday, September 29th: Define the following terms, and write each definition on your Vocabulary List sheet: contaminate, spontaneous generation, biogenesis.

For Tuesday, September 30th: Complete the reading assignment in your textbook on Where does life come from?, pp. 19 - 21. Answer statements 1 - 5 in complete sentences. If you do not write the statement/question, then, the answer should include the statement/question. This will let you know exactly what you are answering (gives clarity to your answer); it is especially helpful when you review your work.

For Wednesday, October 01st: Complete the handout given to you in class today. The answers to both questions are located in Figure 14 on page 20: Visualizing the Origins of Life.

For Thursday, October 02nd: Explain stimulus and response. How is response to a stimulus related to homeostasis? Write in ink!

For Friday, October 24th: Define the following vocabulary words: cell wall; cell membrane; cytoplasm; nucleus; mitochondrion; chloroplast; ribosome; Golgi body; endoplasmic reticulum; vacuole; nucleolus; cytoskeleton; lysosome; vesicles; and, organelle. These words are related to the structure of the cell. Write the definitions on your Vocabulary Sheet. Make certain that you skip a line after each definition. Use your textbook, pp. 38 - 45. If you can not find the words in your textbook, use the dictionary.

Week of October 27th thru 29th: End of 1st Quarter
For Monday, October 27th: (Due October 29th) Read pp. 10 - 11, in your textbook. Answer the five (5) statements located under Applying Science: Does temperature affect the rate of bacterial reproduction? The statements to be answered are under the subtitle - Solving the Problem. First, write the question, then, write the answer/response under the question. Skip a line before writing the next question.
Bring your composition book to class tomorrow.

For Thursday, October 30th: (Due Monday, November 03rd) Define flagellum and cilia. Write the definitions on your 'vocabulary sheet'. Also, examine the pictures and read the information on pp. 48 - 49 in your textbook. Answer the following statements: (1) What are the similarities and differences between a fluorescence microscope and a phase-contrast microscope? (2) Compare and contrast the features of a TEM and an SEM. [Review and follow the format for HW]

Week of November 03rd thru 07th: Beginning of 2nd Quarter

Week of December 01st thru 05th:
For Monday, December 01st: Project - Model of a Plant or Animal Cell - due December 18th. Below is the criteria for the 'project'. Value is 20% of grade.

The purpose of this project is to reinforce your understanding of the structure of the cell; and, to associate the structure of your model to represent some basic organelles/parts along with their functions. Below are guidelines to help you create a model of a plant or animal cell. The cell parts must be well-crafted, colorful and neat. There must be at least ten (10) structural parts (organelles), which would include the cell membrane and the cell wall.

  1. The base of the model should be cardboard or Styrofoam, a stiff material; no poster board. Its dimensions must be between 8" x 10" and 10" x 12". 10 points.
  2. Organelles must be fixed to the base so they do not fall off or become loose when touched or when the project is moved. 20 points.
  3. Organelles must be labeled, to identify each part. 10 points.
  4. Organelles must be crafted or made to have their own distinctive characteristic (appearance). 20 points.
  5. Creativity and Color: Creativity involves the materials that are used to make or craft each organelle. (Think of the model shown to you in class.) The coloring of the different organelles must be of pre-colored material and/or colored by makers or colored pencils. 15 points.
  6. Neatness: A tidy project is one that does not have the adhesive/glue that is used to keep the organelles in place, seen throughout the project either on the floor of the project or on other parts. The glue should dry clear and located only on the bottom of the organelles (parts) to keep them in place. 15 points.
  7. The names of the organelles and their functions must be typed. After each name and function, double-space before typing the next organelle and function. Paper's title should be - Plant Cell: Parts and their Functions or Animal Cell: Parts and their Functions. 10 points.

The total possible points for each criterion depend on you.
